Sean Hayes is an American actor and pianist who played Jack McFarland in Will & Grace.

Jack McFarland[]

Prior to being cast, Hayes worked as a stage actor and musician in Chicago. He also appeared in a Doritos commercial in 1998. However it wasn't until he starred as the lead in the gay-themed independent film Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998) that he got the attention of the producers of Will & Grace.

Casting[]

Hayes admitted that he liked the script for Will & Grace but threw it away because he was at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah at that time and could not afford airfare just to audition for the role of Will. When he did audition for Jack, he met with producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. Hayes recalls that as he was leaving the room, without turning around he told the producers, "Stop looking at my ass Mutchnick" and slammed the door.[1] This later inspired a scene in the episode The Hole Truth when Jack accuses Will of lusting over him as he storms off.

Portrayal[]

Hayes' portrayal has gained critical acclaim for his portrayal of Jack, being nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series consistently throughout the show's original run and winning three SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. He won the Emmy on the first year. However, Jack's character also met some criticism mostly for perpetuating the camp stereotype for gay men.
